A big hello from LA!

Well, here we are in Universal City, having spent the last five nights in Anaheim. So far on this trip we have been to both Disneyland parks, Knott’s Berry Farm, and Sea World San Diego. Next up is Six Flags Magic Mountain and (of course) Universal Studios Hollywood. I thought I would use this first blog to share a few reflections on our trip so far.

First up, I don’t know if I would call this a ‘tip’ but for people coming from the UK to the USA I have to say that jetlag is awesome! We always say that you should get to theme parks early to avoid queues, but that can be a challenge if the park is a long distance away. But being on UK time makes it so much easier. Every morning we’ve been wide awake before 7am. A couple of days ago we were in the new Star Wars area at Disneyland by 8.05am. We got on the new ride three times before most people had even made it through the park’s security check!

Speaking of the new Star Wars area, I have to say that I am so glad to see Disney really upping their game with some serious ride and theming investment. In the past I’ve been critical of Disney for relying on their reputation to sell tickets. But the Star Wars area is a massive investment and they’ve done it brilliantly. So detailed and so immersive. I can think of no higher praise than to say that it is as good as Universal. Bravo!

Finally, I don’t know if it’s a result of running this site, but Hayley and I have definitely become much more discerning and critical about rides. When we were at Disneyland a couple of days ago we were going to go on the Matterhorn Bobsled ride, but when we saw it had a 50 minute queue we said “forget that!” and went back on Space Mountain. The Bobsled may be the oldest Disney coaster in the world, but it both looked and sounded very jerky. So lets spread the word. Focus your time on newer, better designed, smoother coasters. Don’t waste time on things you know you’re not going to like.

Anyway, that’s it from me for now. Full ride reviews, ratings and tips will follow when we get chance to upload them.

All the best

Joe
